JICA
The JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) is an implementation agency for technical cooperation of Japan's official development assistance (ODA). Its aim is to contribute to the socioeconomic development or the reconstruction of developing countries. JICA currently maintains offices in about 100 countries worldwide and is expanding activities in over 160 countries and regions.

Area Focused Training
Background

In the CARICOM countries, although the solid waste management is been observed as a preferential topic, a technical measure to the issues is not been yet directed, and most of the approach which has been taken is still remaining ate sanitary management in disposal sites. It is said that most of the landfill will be filled to capacity within few years, so that to tackle with appropriate solid waste management is been required emergently.

Considering these circumstances, we had chosen Japan, and especially Okinawa prefecture which had similarity between Caribbean islands to be the place for training. Further more, Okinawa is leading prefecture in promoting re-cycling and environmental beautification, minutely waste division, and environmental tax.

This training aims to make participants understand the necessity and learn the techniques of solid waste management, and to utilize it for planning and implementing appropriate solid waste management in respective organizations and countries.

For what?

This program aims to direct the issues on sustainable solid waste management in small islands which participating organization are facing, and to formulate the practical measures to the issues.

For whom?

This program is offered to the officers who work in the field of solid waste management.

How?

Participants shall have opportunities in Japan to have a lecture, observation and exercise on activities, present situation and constraints of solid waste management in respective countries and Japan.Participants will also formulate an action plan on how to achieve sustainable solid waste management based on the issues in respective countries, putting the knowledge and ideas acquired and discussed in Japan.
